Did you know that orthodontic treatment can start before the need for braces or Invisalign? In fact, it’s recommended that your child comes in for their first consultation around the age of seven years old. This helps assess their current smile needs and gives the team a chance to create a treatment plan to guide your child’s jaw development and prepare for braces. In today’s blog, the team at Riverside Dental Group in California is here to talk about why phase one care is necessary.
What Happens During Their Consultation
When you bring your kid into their first visit with our team, we may take X-rays and thoroughly examine their smile. This allows us to get a closer look at their teeth, jaw, and any potentially misalignment concerns. We will use this information to create the most efficient treatment plan. The first phase of orthodontic treatment involves guiding the growth of their jaw to avoid issues like overbites and correcting the direction of their teeth.
Interceptive Treatments Options
Phase one focuses on preparing your child for the alignment process in the future. We may use treatments such as retainers or expanders to help adjust the growth of their jaw. Retainers can be used to keep their pearly whites from shifting out of place. These are typically removable for comfort and ease of use for your child. Expanders may be necessary if the jaw is not wide enough or fully developed. Expanders can help make room to correct overlapping or poorly spaced teeth. The interceptive treatment phase may take around one year to complete. After this, we will move on to the true alignment process with braces or Invisalign to correct your smile’s alignment.
We Offer Orthodontic Care for Adults
If you were unable to receive orthodontic treatment as a child, or your teeth have shifted out of place, it’s not too late to correct these issues. We offer traditional braces, esthetic braces, and Invisalign for adult patients who want to correct their smiles. Invisalign can offer more discretion to patients and is virtually invisible to others. For more significant misalignment issues, braces may be recommended instead. Your orthodontist can explain your options during your consultation.
